Dr. Leandro Sousa, from Altamira, Brazil, is an ichthyologist and Professor of Biology at the Universidade Federal do Pará, located directly at the Xingu rapids. He conducts extensive fieldwork with local fishermen to better understand the remarkable loricariid diversity found in the region. Using scuba diving techniques, he documents the fishes, the rocky habitats they occupy, and the traditional methods used by fishermen to capture them. Since 2014, he has coordinated a Conservation Breeding Project for Xingu endemic species at the University, focusing primarily on Hypancistrus zebra and other Loricariidae. He also founded the IctioXingu project, a social media initiative aimed at raising public awareness about native ornamental fish and their conservation.
